Neth Ghrel: The Reforged Tongue

A Revised and Unified Edition of Feral

Compiled from The Aldacron, the traditions of Sanguine Wild, and the lore of The Sundered Guard

The First Howl

Before the fall of Aldalonde, before the fires blackened the Tree of Life, there were voices carried only in instinct.

Not the speech of courts. Not the language of scholars. Not the measured tongue of priests or kings.

There was only the hunt.

In the deep forests beyond the reach of stone walls and civilized banners, the Weres spoke in growls, clipped cries, warning calls, and battle snarls. The language was not born from ink or parchment, but from survival. From blood. From pack.

The first words of Neth Ghrel were never written.

A wolf warning another of danger. A hunter calling the pack to strike. A grieving survivor mourning the dead beside a dying fire.

From those sounds came meaning. From meaning came memory. And from memory came language.

Kaguran Bloodwild, Leviathan Bloodwild, and Nyren Mistrunner first gathered those sounds into something greater among the warriors of Sanguine Wild. What began as scattered cries became the foundation of a true tongue — harsh, guttural, primal, and alive.

When the Sundered Guard walked beside Sanguine Wild beneath the banners of Shadowbane, the language crossed into the Guard itself. Rangers, druids, scouts, and warriors carried the tongue into battle. It became the language of hunters, rebels, wanderers, and those who still listened to the wild places between worlds.

Then came ruin.

Shadowbane faded. Guilds scattered. Worlds changed.

Neth Ghrel nearly vanished into silence.

Years later, Haliit Ferase still carried fragments of the old tongue. Laatho, hearing the remnants spoken aloud, recognized that the language still breathed beneath the ashes. Together with Petrus Aduro, they rebuilt what had nearly been lost.

Words were gathered. Grammar forged. Meaning restored.

And so Feral was reborn.

Not merely as the language of Weres, but as the living memory of those who endured.

What is Neth Ghrel?

Feral, or Neth Ghrel, is the language of the creatures known as Weres.

Originally intended for use among the were-wolves, bears, and rats of Sanguine Wild and The Sundered Guard in Shadowbane, Feral started simply: a few battle cries, warnings, greetings, and hunting phrases.

Over time, the language expanded into a true spoken tongue with grammar, structure, and lore deeply tied to the ideals of the Guard.

Neth Ghrel is a harsh and primal language built around:

  • instinct
  • loyalty
  • survival
  • balance
  • memory
  • rebirth

It is not elegant. It was never meant to be.

It is the language of those who survive the fall and still rise again.

Pronunciation Guide

Feral is a guttural language full of hard sounds and clipped syllables.

Most words avoid soft flowing tones in favor of growls, rolling consonants, and abrupt endings.

Ceremonial Lore

The Seed Rite

Among the Guard, the planting of a seed is more than remembrance.

Every verak planted beside a fire or at the roots of an aldra symbolizes a vow that the Guard will survive another age.

The rite began after the Fall of Aldalonde, when Petrus Aduro recovered five surviving seeds from the ashes of the Tree of Life.

Since then, seeds have symbolized:

  • survival after devastation
  • memory carried across worlds
  • rebirth through sacrifice
  • the enduring spirit of the Guard

During funerary rites, a single seed is placed into the earth beside the fallen.

The words traditionally spoken are:

"graesh tora verath."

"Through ash, life returns."

The Hunter's Mark

Before battle, Rangers and scouts often mark their weapons or armor with ash lines.

This ritual traces back to the destruction of Aldalonde.

The markings symbolize:

  • acceptance of death
  • devotion to balance
  • remembrance of the fallen
  • loyalty to the pack

A common phrase during the ritual is:

"grahneth aldalonde."

"Remember Aldalonde."

The Ember Vigil

During times of great loss, members of the Guard may observe the Ember Vigil.

A fire is kept burning through the night while stories are shared of lost worlds, fallen kin, and victories bought with sacrifice.

At dawn, ashes from the fire are scattered at the roots of a living tree.

The closing words of the Vigil are:

"nareth varna."

"The Guard endures."

The Ember Oath

English Version

We walk the old paths. We remember the fallen. Through ash, life returns. Nature's Sword. The People's Shield. The Guard endures.
